V. The Life Project:
Restoration and Conservation of Fauna and Flora in the Re-flooded Hula Valley.
V.1. Aims of the Life project
Management of the re-flooded area to:
- Maximize the bio-diversity of plants and animal species.
- Encourage the re-introduction of plants.
- Create the basis for re-establishing wildlife, principally migrating birds.
- Manage the meadows by grazing large herbivores.
- Combine eco-tourism with environmentally friendly agriculture.
The purpose of the study is to determine the composition and structure of the vegetation in the renewed Hula swamp, in order to be able to predict changes in vegetation units and to plan the proper management of the area with regard to the re-establishment of plant and wildlife habitats.
The proposed project is also applicable to other wetland habitats in Israel such as:
- The Naíaman swampland close to Acre on the Mediterranean Sea shore. These swamplands are composed of salty marshes and sweet water from the Naíaman River.
- Beit Zaida wetlands, close to the where the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River and three other streams converge.
- Nahal Dalia wetlands where a salty marshland and a freshwater stream converge
